The EU Commission is presenting its proposal for a European climate protection law today, Wednesday. Bitkom President Achim Berg explains:
"The European Climate Law needs a digital DNA: The Europe-wide, climate-friendly transformation of industry, energy, agriculture and transport is a mammoth task. It is therefore important to take digital solutions into account right from the start. The German EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020 must ensure that the regulation on European climate protection is consistently thought out and designed digitally.
Digital transformation and climate change are the two greatest challenges of america gambling data our time. Climate neutrality by 2050 and a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 can only be achieved with the help of digital technology.
Digital, climate-efficient solutions already exist for many of the current problems: In Industry 4.0, for example , sensors and intelligent machines ensure that energy requirements are reduced to a minimum, 3D printing saves resources in production, and in management, video conferences ensure that air travel can be avoided.
All political means must now be exhausted to bring climate-friendly digital solutions to the masses, instead of cementing old, inefficient structures. To do this, we need not only targeted investments in low-CO2 technologies and products - but also reliable incentives for companies to operate in a truly sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
Furthermore, for subsidies, for example in the EU research program, it should be stipulated that every second euro goes into digital solutions.”
